Thinking About Starting a New Year's Diet? Hear Me Out...

The pressure is on. Between ads on TV, coworker breakroom chats, and your social media feed everybody is talking diets right about now.

This is the diet industries Superbowl! “New Year- New Me!” It is a fabulous time to sell meal plans, diet books, detox products, gym memberships, or anything that insinuates that you would be better if you lost weight. The diet industry feeds on any holiday food guilt you may be feeling, to make a sale.

I spent a week at home for the holidays and I watched live TV for the first time in a long time. I was in disbelief by the number of problematic, fatphobic, diet culture promoting commercials I witnessed. Wager money on losing weight?! Uhh what? That is downright unethical & extremely concerning. Take this pill and lose fat instantly! We’re still pretending that works?! And of course, “WW”. AKA new name, same bullshit.

Needless to say, I am pretty happy to be back to my diet free bubble of just watching Netflix!

If you are thinking “but diets are innocent, they are just trying to help make us healthy!” Believe me- I understand your confusion. Diets can be so sneaky, but the bottom line is their bottom line. They are a business, trying to make money off of insecurities & misinformation. They sell a product knowing full well that it does not work for most people. Knowing that it can be harmful to one’s health- mental and physical. But in our culture- thin can seem like the best thing a person can be. Think back to your own dieting experiences, maybe previous New Year’s resolutions. What happened? Did you experience some weight loss and maybe get comments from others that made you feel good? At some point did the diet get harder? Did the weight stop coming off? Did you become obsessed with food? Were you “good” all day and then ate anything in sight late at night? Did the comments from others stop? Did you feel guilty for not keeping the weight off? Did you then try to process all over again, dieting harder than ever, only to get the same result?

That’s how diets work! They don’t! Diets keep you in a vicious cycle. They keep you trapped in the highs and lows, and makes you lose your trust around food. Diets keep you focused on weight and acts as a distraction to the bigger picture of life.

Are you ready to try something new? Do you want to stop the vicious cycle of relying on diet plans, calorie trackers, or smartwatches to tell you how to live your life? Do you want to be present in your life to focus on things that matter? Do you want to care for your health in a sustainable way?
